Have you ever been to a site and when you tried to leave a popup appeared on the screen saying “wait don’t go yet” or “do you need help before leaving?” Those are exit popups.

Here’s a picture of one:

Most of the time you find these popups used on sales pages, however:

Should You Use Exit Popups On Your Landing Pages Or Blog?

Popups are an annoyance to most people so if you don’t want to annoy your readers than no.

However they do convert well according to many so think it over good. Here is ian talking about them converting for his sites.

They work good for landing pages because this traffic usually comes once and then buys or leaves and aren’t usual visitors. So maybe the decision could be made to show an exit popup to only search engine traffic, the quick browsers of your site.

Or if you put feeding your family above user experience and exit popups don’t kill the experience too bad maybe we should use them for every site, landing page, and blog?

Aren’t All Popups Bad?

I thought so also but I think the attitude is changing, at least from the people who benefit from popups. For instance I always thought that a popup within the first few seconds of entering a site was in poor taste and a good indicator of a more spammy site however now that problogger has touted the rewards of using the practice I’m seeing more and more popups around the blogosphere.

What about popups on the exit also Darren?

Most end users will say popups are annoying. Is the general opinion changing from the non-webmaster/blogger view? I might have to install some entry and exit popups here shortly.

How Do I Make Exit Popups?

Aweber will allow you to make an exit popup during your form creation. In the webforms look for “Exit Pop-up - Like pop-up, but the new window appears when the visitor leaves the current page.”

A few notes about the change

1. You should still receive the same updates through rss or email, full feed and all.

2. The site will be more “focused” than previously and now covering all topics that fall under the umbrella of “digital products” only.

3. I’ll accept guest posts now if they are relevant to digital products and your absolute best work I’ll also consider moving the site to multiple authors. contact me

4. Commenting is turned off.

5. I’ll do monthly income reports for this blog only. Stay tuned This should be real interesting because I never really monetized the old 45n5 version (I think it made $50 last month lol)

6. The site is now on Wordpress, icky, but I can’t test or develop anything on the most popular platform that you all use unless I’m using it also.

I chose to focus on digital products because I don’t see any blog that focuses exclusively on the topic or does it well and it’s something I’ve wanted to study more for a long time.

Comments were turned off for multiple reasons but the biggest were time management on my part and the inability for me to check comments regularly and have spam sitting there for a day or two sometimes. Others operate successfully without comments, for instance Seth Godin doesn’t do comments, neither does Calacanis.

The technical changes are almost finished and now I’ll attempt to ease into some posting with some more focus than the usual randomness. If you have any thoughts then blog them or contact me.

The Clickbank Datafeed

Clickbank provides a giant list of all their products you can download to your computer and play with, download it here.

The file expands to just over 20 megabytes so the xml is a huge file and will probably lock up an older computer when trying to process the file.

In addition you will need some programming skills to be able to manipulate the data.

Fortunately if you do have a faster computer and some programming chops then clickbank will give you some tools to get started.

Clickbank Ads is a demo application that provides the code to download the clickbank datafeed, parse the clickbank datafeed, and also pull the correct products based on keywords you choose.

Getting the giant list of clickbank products might not be the easiest thing to do right now but they do offer it and for the motivated it’s pretty fun to have a database full of their info.

The Clickbank Api

The Clickbank API (application programmer interface) doesn’t let you download bulk product data, or any product information, but instead gives you access to your reporting and sales data on clickbank.

The Clickbank API is different from the Clickbank Datafeed because the datafeed is something you download all the info and then play with it. With the Clickbank API you only request the data you want and they give it to your application.

Good reasons for you to be interested in the Clickbank API is if you have your own programs that you are constantly downloading stats from Clickbank and importing them into your program. With the Clickbank api you could automate this process.

The information currently available from the Clickbank API is sale, rebill, refund, chargeback, cancel rebill, and test.

Clickbank Is Open With Their Data

I think it’s pretty cool that clickbank offers access for anyone to download their product data or personal sales data.

Learning to use these two tools can give you reports of the new products, movers and shakers, real time sales stats, and more.

The following covers a free way to convert words to affiliate links and might be a bit technical for some. If you want a premium way to do this without the coding then click here.

Affiliate links are where a blog can earn a large percentage of money, however converting all the keywords to affiliate links can be tiring, easily forgotten, or takes way to long to continually update your archives with new affiliate programs. Bummer if you want to make some money with you blog.

Kb-Linker is a FREE plugin for wordpress that makes turning your words in your blog to affiliate links, (I’m using it on this site.)

How To Automatically Convert Keywords To Affiliate Links

After installing KB-Linker go to Settings->Kb-Linker and enter your keywords and the links they should go to in the box and hit save. It should look like this:

godaddy->http://www.digitalproductreporter.com/godaddy
clickbank->http://www.digitalproductreporter.com/clickbank
store->http://www.digitalproductreporter.com/storestacker

That’s it, Kb-Linker will change the first keyword it finds in each post that you chose to change and convert it to the link throughout your archives.

Modifying The Kb-Linker

There are two changes that are usually requsted of the Kb-Linker and here is how to make the modifications:

1. Make the links NoFollow

The answer to how to do this can be found in part 2 of this article.

2. Make more than the first keyword in each post convert to affiliate links

By default KB-linker only convert the first keyword to a link, even if it finds the word multiple times. There also isn’t an easy way to change this setting without changing code but here’s how to do it:

Find the text in the code that says this (it’s in two places)

// that “1″ at the end limits it to replacing the keyword only once per post.

And simply change that number 1 to however many times you want to convert the same keyword to an affiliate link.

Internal Linking Made Easy

Internal linking is where you link to pages on your own blog. You can do this to help the user or also for seo purposes to help “theme” pages on your site and pass google juice. For instance if you want to rank for “purple shoes” then anytime you mention “purple shoes” on your blog you link to your purple shoes blog post.

Doing this is very easy also with KB-Linker, instead of using an affiliate link, just send the keywords to pages on your site

In the video Chris Rempel takes you behind the scenes of his clickbank account and shows exactly how it’s a myth that big lists are better than small lists.

In summary: the affiliate who sends him a couple hundred visitors makes more sales than an affiliate that sends him quadruple the visitors.  Enjoy:

Makes you wonder why people are pushing subscriber tactics that annoy visitors to get the subscriber count up without any mention of the intentions of having a higher number other than the sake of having a high subscriber count.

(ironically the salespage mentioned above does not use entry popups, are bloggers getting more annoying than some sales/pitch pages lol?)

How Do You Get A Responsive List With A Smaller List?

Intent when signing up is a big part of what a list will do later. I’m newer to email marketing but the lists I’ve built where people want information on buying things or they are already proven buyers work much better for me than just pumping up list numbers for no apparent reason.

For an example, instead of starting a generic newsletter on “scrapbooking”, try a scrapbooking newsletter for people who want the “best scrapbooking deals of the week”, or “weekly scrapbooking coupons” and see what list buys more
